I’ve been around a lot of different types of animals over the years. One thing I’ve learned is this:
Not everything transfers between species, but the basics do.
If you truly understand the fundamentals in one species, you’ll be miles ahead when you step into another.
What Transfers Well
Reading animals might be the most valuable skill you can develop.
If you know what a sick calf looks like, you should be able to recognize when a pig (or any other animal) is off.
The signs may vary slightly, but the patterns are the same:
• Off feed
• Low energy
• Change in behavior
Good stockmen don’t just look at animals—they read them.
Basic Nutrition Thinking
Nutrition absolutely carries over, at least at a foundational level.
Protein, energy, intake, and balance matter across all species.
Now, how each animal “uses” that nutrition is different.
• Pigs are fast metabolizers and convert feed to muscle quickly
• Cattle take longer and develop differently
• Sheep have specific sensitivities, like copper
But the thought process behind feeding? That transfers.
Where You Need to Be Careful
Not everything is interchangeable. Health tools (especially medications) are where things get more complicated. What works in one species may be used differently, require different dosing, or not be appropriate at all.
There are situations where extra-label use comes into play, especially in species like goats, but that’s not something to guess on.
That’s where research and veterinary guidance matter.

The Real Skill
The goal isn’t to treat every species the same.
It’s to understand:
• What knowledge you can carry over
• What needs to be adjusted
• And when you need to learn something new
That awareness is what separates someone who’s just experienced from someone who’s truly adaptable.
This is why good stockmen can switch species and still be effective.
