Before we get into daily care, there’s one thing you need to understand:

Genetics matter.

In the show industry, we’ve selected for traits like bone, shape, and wool quality. Not every sheep is built the same, and no amount of work will completely overcome poor genetics.

So ask yourself:

Are you saving money by buying cheaper? Or spending more time trying to make one into something it’s not?

Good genetics don’t replace work, but they make everything easier.

Why Sheep Are Different

Sheep are the closest thing we have to “an artist’s animal” in this industry.

You’re not just maintaining them—you’re shaping and presenting them.

That also means they require more maintenance at home than most species.

Leg wool management is everything with sheep.

If you don’t stay ahead of it daily, it will fall behind quickly.

Leg Wool Management (Two Approaches)

One of the biggest decisions you’ll make is how to manage leg wool.

There are two main systems:

1. Leg Wraps

This is the most traditional method.

• Prevents sheep from chewing wool

• Keeps legs clean and protected

• Requires consistency and attention

Basic routine:

• Remove wraps daily or every other day

• Rinse legs (wash if needed)

• Blow dry completely

• Apply sheen or conditioner

• Rewrap properly

Important:

Always start wrapping at the hoof and work upward.

Once above the knee, wrap back down.

Never wrap too tight. Circulation issues will set you back fast.

2. Muzzles + Natural Wool Care

This is a simpler, lower-maintenance option. You're able to manage it much more easily day to day.

• Use a muzzle to prevent chewing

• Allows leg wool to stay more natural and breathe

• Focus on conditioning instead of wrapping

Routine:

• Apply conditioner in the evening using a fogger

• (Common mix: small amount of conditioner + water)

• Leave overnight

• Rinse in the morning

This method reduces labor but still protects wool quality.

Choose the system that fits your routine and consistency level.

Body Wool & Skin Care

Wool length and skin health go together.

• Shear regularly (about once a month)

• Keep wool short enough to manage the hide underneath

• Condition the skin—not just the wool

A good hide conditioner will improve handle, flexibility, and overall presentation.

You don’t need something complicated—just something consistent that works for your program.

Keep It Simple

It’s easy to overcomplicate sheep care.

Don’t.

The people who are best at this aren’t doing everything. They’re doing the right things consistently.

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, sheep require time.

There’s no shortcut around that.

But if you stay consistent and choose a system you can stick with, they become much easier to manage.

Focus on keeping wool clean and protected, maintaining healthy skin, and staying ahead of daily care

Because with sheep, small details add up faster than any other species.

And the people who win are the ones who manage those details every single day.
