We’ve all done it.
You get a standout line of females—the kind that becomes the backbone of your herd. They produce well, they look right, and before long, you’re breeding them heavily.
Then one day, you realize:
That’s almost all you have.
Same genetics.
Same strengths.
Same weaknesses.
That’s where problems start.
The Risk of Too Much of a Good Thing
A strong line is an asset—but overusing it limits your herd.
Every genetic line carries flaws, whether you see them early or not.
A few generations in, those small issues can turn into real problems:
Great maternal line… but poor structure… now replacements struggle to move
Strong growth genetics… but poor mothering… now you’re raising bottle babies
When everything traces back to the same source, those flaws stack fast.
A Lesson Learned the Hard Way
At one point when I was younger, I had a doe that—to me—was the second coming.
I bred her into everything.
Within just a few years, she was behind most of my herd.
What I didn’t realize at the time was what I had just done to myself.
She had a genetic predisposition to losing muscle in her rear as she aged.
At first, it wasn’t obvious.
But a few generations in, it started showing up everywhere.
Now instead of building forward, I was spending time, money, and effort trying to breed it back out.
If I had researched her parents more or waited before spreading her genetics through my entire herd, I could have avoided the problem entirely.
Use a Line—Don’t Let It Use You
The goal isn’t to avoid great genetics.
It’s to use them with purpose.
Think of your best line as a core—not your entire herd.
A core line is something you can build from, return to, and use strategically
Not something you flood your entire program with.
Understanding Linebreeding (The Right Way)
Linebreeding can be a powerful tool—if you handle it correctly.
When you linebreed a strong group:
You tighten genetic consistency
You increase the chances of reproducing desired traits
You build a line that can “breed true”
But it cuts both ways.
Good traits get stronger—and so do bad ones
If that line has weak feet, poor udders, or bad structure
Those problems will show up faster and stronger.
Why a Core Line Matters
Used correctly, a line can act as a testing ground.
Instead of spreading those genetics across your whole herd:
You refine them inside the line
You identify problems early
You strengthen what works
Then—and only then—you use it across the rest of your herd.
That’s how you gain consistency without spreading risk.
Don’t Swing Too Far the Other Way
There’s a flip side to this.
If you’re constantly outcrossing and never developing anything internally, you lose consistency
You chase results instead of building them
You never establish a “type” in your herd
Most operations benefit from a balance of linebreeding + strategic outcrossing

What to Avoid
Overusing one genetic line across the entire herd
Spreading a line before it’s been proven and refined
Having too few distinct lines
Or the opposite, having no defined lines at all

When you find something special—build it.
But don’t let it become everything.
The strongest programs aren’t built on one great animal.
They’re built on options, flexibility, and control over direction
Because the more tools you have genetically—
The easier it is to fix problems, make progress, and stay consistent over time.
