Livestock judging is the most utilized skill in this industry. We use it to make every decision in our breeding programs, stock show projects, and even the final product they produce. While those products may differ, the process of selecting good stock is the same.

I’m not talking about the official title of livestock judging, although that plays an important role. I’m talking about the everyday act of evaluating your own animals.

If you don’t understand structure, you’re guessing.

Judging your own stock well is one of the most valuable things you can do. If you’re honest with yourself and approach your animals with a critical eye, improvement becomes much easier. That doesn’t mean every animal needs to be perfect or culled if it isn’t—but if you understand the flaws, you can manage them.

You can make better decisions in breeding, feeding, and fitting when you know what needs attention. If you ignore a flaw and pretend an animal is perfect, you’ll never improve it.

Knowledge is power.

Why Structure Comes First:

Every evaluation should start with structure.

Almost every shortcoming in an animal can be traced back to how it’s built. Because of that, you should become obsessed with evaluating structure.

Your goals may vary depending on your operation, and you may not look for the exact same thing in every animal—but once you understand structure, you’ll learn how to apply it across situations.

Most people will tell you to start from the ground up because it’s the foundation. That’s not wrong—but I prefer a different way of thinking.

Don’t think of an animal like a house.

Think of it like a car.

A house doesn’t have to move. A car does. And so does your animal.

A car with great tires isn’t going anywhere without an engine. In the same way, an animal can have excellent feet and legs, but if it’s built wrong up front, it will never move correctly.

Start at the Shoulder:

The shoulder is the center of the entire design.

It’s one of the few things that should look similar across species, even though the rest of the animal may differ. The angles around it may change, but the structure itself remains consistent.

The shoulder is made up of two bones:

the scapula (shoulder blade)

the humerus (upper front leg bone)

These two bones form the angle of the shoulder.

You want them to be roughly equal in length—or for the humerus to be slightly longer.

The scapula and surrounding muscle provide forward motion, while the humerus controls how the leg reaches and sets down.

If the angle is too straight, or the humerus is too short, the animal’s reach will be limited. Ideally, the front foot should land in line with the nose or slightly ahead.

If the scapula is too straight, it can also interfere with the neck. The neck should come out of the top of the shoulder with freedom and mobility. It should not be jammed low or restricted.

A poorly placed neck will affect gait, speed, and overall movement efficiency.

Matching the Front and Rear:

The rear of the animal should mirror the front—just in reverse.

If the angles of the front and rear don’t match, the animal has to compensate when it moves. That’s where you start to see sidewinding, choppy movement, and wasted motion.

At that point, the animal is using more energy than it should to perform something that should be effortless.

Rear structure is also influenced by hook and pin placement, width, and angle. If those are too straight or too narrow, compensation happens again.

Legs and Structural Integrity:

Legs should be straight, sturdy, and flexible.

Anything outside of that creates problems.

Bowed or buckled legs lead to compensation. Weak or overly straight pasterns lead to restricted movement.

Everything in the animal needs to balance. If one part is too long or too short, it creates inefficiency across the entire system.

The rib and loin should match the distance the animal needs to travel. If it's overly long or straight the animal will need compensate by either roaching in it's top or stepping past where the foot should fall.

Understanding Movement:

Movement tells the truth.

A correct gait should look effortless.

It should not look like an army march, be overly high-stepping, stompy, or stiff.

Excessive bounce is a red flag. It’s your first clue something in the structure isn’t right.

The topline should stay level during movement. If you drew a straight line across the back, nothing should rise above it.

The Triangle Concept:

When an animal moves correctly, its motion forms a repeating triangle pattern:

The first between the reaching front leg and the one moving back

The second between the front leg going back and the rear leg coming forward

And the third between the rear leg moving forward and the one reaching back

If parts of the leg fall inside those lines, the animal is compensating.

Tracking:

The rear foot should land in the track of the front foot.

This is one of the best indicators of correct structure and balance.

If the animal falls short, steps to the side, or struggles to reach, or goes past the front foot something is out of alignment.

The Big Picture:

If an animal isn’t working in sync, something is picking up the slack.

That means more strain, more effort, and more problems over time.

Structure isn’t just about how an animal looks—it’s about how it functions.

When you select livestock, keep that in mind.

It will keep you out of a lot of tight spots.
