In our last article, we discussed structure and movement. Structure tells us how an animal is built, while movement tells us how well that structure functions.

Now it's time to evaluate what fills that skeleton.

This is where many beginning evaluators start paying attention—but experienced evaluators know these traits only matter if they're built on a structurally sound foundation.

Today we're looking at two closely related concepts: mass and width.

Mass tells us how much animal we're looking at.

Width tells us how that mass is distributed.

The best livestock possess both, but more importantly, they possess them in balance.

Understanding Mass:

Mass is one of those traits that's easy to recognize but surprisingly difficult to define.

When experienced stockmen talk about an animal having "more mass," they aren't talking about one specific body part. They're talking about the overall amount of substance the animal carries.

Bone.

Muscle.

Body.

Frame.

Everything working together.

One of the easiest mistakes beginners make is confusing muscle with mass.

A heavily muscled animal isn't automatically massive.

Likewise, a tall animal isn't automatically powerful.

Mass is really about proportionality. A moderate-framed animal should carry moderate substance. A larger-framed animal should naturally carry more bone, body, and muscle.

When those pieces don't match, the animal begins to look awkward. You've probably seen one before.

A wether lamb with tremendous muscle but very little skeleton underneath it.

Or another that's all frame with very little substance to fill it.

Neither one appears balanced because the skeleton and the body aren't telling the same story.

The very best livestock simply look like everything belongs together.

Reading Mass:

The next question becomes:

How do we evaluate it?

Fortunately, livestock leave us clues.

Cannon Bone

One of the first places I look in a young animal is the cannon bone.

The cannon bone is the section of bone between the knee and the hoof on the front leg.

While an animal continues growing as it matures, the amount of bone it carries early can give you clues about the level of substance it may possess as an adult.

Don't just look at how big the cannon bone is—look at how it fits the animal. A long, fine cannon on an otherwise moderate animal can make it read leggy and refined, while a shorter, heavier cannon can contribute to a more substantial appearance. You're looking for proportion between the bone, the frame, and the rest of the animal.

Animals with adequate bone are generally better equipped to support additional muscle and body mass.

Animals that are extremely fine-boned may always appear refined, regardless of how they're fed.

That doesn't mean bigger bone is always better.

Extremely coarse bone can become just as undesirable as insufficient bone.

Like nearly everything in livestock judging, moderation usually wins in the game of function.

Head Strength

Another area I think many people overlook is the head.

A broad, masculine head in males—or a strong, feminine head in females—can often accompany greater skeletal strength throughout the rest of the body.

No, head width doesn't guarantee a productive animal. But experienced evaluators rarely rely on one measurement. They gather clues. A strong head, adequate bone, appropriate body, and correct structure.

Eventually those observations begin reinforcing one another until the entire animal starts making sense.

Understanding Width:

Once you've determined how much animal you're looking at, the next question becomes:

How is that animal built?

That's where width comes in.

Width is about dimension and capacity.

A wider-made animal with adequate body capacity generally has more internal dimension to support the biological functions we're asking of it, from digestion and respiration to reproduction and production.

That capacity, when combined with structural correctness, can contribute to durability, efficiency, and productivity throughout the animal's life.

However, wider isn't automatically better.

Excessive width can become just as problematic as insufficient width if the skeleton underneath can't support it.

The goal isn't maximum width.

The goal is functional width.

Reading Width:

There are several areas that make evaluating width much easier.

Chest Floor

The chest floor is one of the first places I evaluate.

Imagine drawing a rectangle between the front legs beginning at the armpits and extending straight to the ground.

Ideally, the legs remain relatively parallel throughout that distance.

If the legs begin pinching together toward the feet, you've probably lost true width.

Again, this is only one observation.

It should support everything else you're seeing rather than determine your entire opinion.

Width Through the Twist

The same principle applies behind the animal.

The twist is simply the distance carried between the rear legs.

A wider, more uniformly carried twist often indicates greater capacity and dimension through the rear portion of the animal.

Like everything else, balance matters.

An extremely narrow rear limits capacity.

An excessively wide rear may create movement and structural issues if it doesn't fit the rest of the skeleton.

Width Must Match the Skeleton

One of the most overlooked concepts in livestock judging is that width should remain proportional throughout the animal.

Look at the width over the shoulders.

Look at the width over the hips.

Now compare those measurements to the placement of the feet.

Ideally, those dimensions work together.

If the feet stand dramatically wider than the skeleton above them—or the skeleton is much wider than the feet supporting it—the animal is often compensating somewhere in its structure.

The more those pieces align, the easier the animal generally moves and the longer it is likely to remain productive.

Putting It All Together:

The biggest mistake beginning evaluators make is evaluating width and mass separately.

Experienced stockmen don't. They look at the complete picture.

Structure provides the framework.

Movement proves the framework works.

Mass tells you how much animal is there.

Width tells you how that mass is distributed across the animal.

None of those traits stand alone.

Takeaway:

The very best livestock don't excel because they have one outstanding quality. They excel because every piece complements the next.

Nothing appears exaggerated.

Nothing seems out of place.

Everything simply fits.
